Mrs. Miller's Amazing Experience
Mrs. Miller was nominated for an amazing opportunity to attend a Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers National Conference in San Diego. Please read below to find out about her experience:
We all know what Michigan winters can be like. Leaving for work when it’s dark and getting home when it’s still dark, gray skies, cold temperatures, and bitter winds. As a teacher, sometimes this can be a tough time of the year. I got a chance of a lifetime to leave this Michigan winter behind if only for the weekend! I had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2016 Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers (ECET2) National Conference in San Diego sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Three hundred passionate teachers from across the country collaborated and learned together.
My name is Kalie Miller and I have been teaching for almost ten years. Currently, I teach first grade at Brooks Elementary. A parent wrote an essay on my behalf nominating me for the conference.
ECET2 conference is part of the Teacher2Teacher family. The goal of ECET2 is to connect passionate educators nationwide to tackle common challenges in education. It is designed and facilitated by teachers for teachers. The aim of the conference centered on the key notion “Every teacher has a story… what’s yours?” We spent three days actively involved in teacher leadership workshops, dialogue-driven colleague circles, and listening to inspirational keynote speakers who pulled at every one of our heartstrings. Throughout the conference, we yelled, “SHOUT OUT” for awesome ideas and stories teachers shared about their teaching journey.
I was reminded our work as teachers matters and often, our job goes above and beyond the job description. I met people from all over the country who wowed me with their expertise. I returned to Michigan motivated, energized, rejuvenated and ready to share everything I learned with the staff at Brooks Elementary and with my fellow Huron Valley teachers
As I headed back to the Michigan winter I was happy to leave, I realized I was not leaving the conference alone. I was bringing back something from everyone I met...stories of teaching and many lessons learned.
The energy the facilitators shared with us with stay with me. I will use my rejuvenated energy to remind my colleagues, teaching is not just a job...it is a true passion and calling.

Donors Choose--donorschoose.org
Several teachers in the HVS community use the Donors Choose program to raise funds for supplies and experiences for their classrooms. This year three Brooks teachers had projects funded through the program. Congratulations to Mrs. Roslyn Adams (speech pathologist), Mrs. Colleen Turner (art teacher), and Mrs. LaPratt (music teacher) for having your projects fully funded. Please be sure to check out the Donors Choose site for more information on these fantastic projects as well as current projects by Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Meyers of Brooks.
